BBFC Ratings:
According to the BBFC, classification works by grouping different age groups in their own sector, which suits the audience for a film suitable with that age range. For example, a film rated ‘U’ stands for universal. This therefore means that any film rated U is suitable for children aged four and over. Similarly, the PG rating stands for Parental Guidance. Parental Guidance films need an audience of a child AND their parent for the prevention of distress to the child. A film with a 12A and 12 rating simply means that the film is not suitable for anyone under the age of 12. A film with a 15 rating means that nobody under the age of 15 should watch the film. This is because at this age, there are much more advanced scenes, such as; strong violence, drug use, bad language and sexual scenes. Again, similarly a film with a 18 rating and R18 should not be seen by anyone under the age of 18. This is due to the mature scenes, the language and drug use.
From looking at the BBFC website at the different age ratings, my group and I have decided that we are going to make our film be suitable for 18 year olds and over. This is because our film is going to consist of occasional bad language, drug use, and mature and gory scenes.
